John,
It's hard to know what to say in a time like this, how to correctly honor such a devastating loss. America has lost a titan. We mourn the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
She will be remembered as one of the greatest jurists of our time. Over the course of her long career, she achieved milestone after milestone, fearlessly blazing a new path for the women who would follow her. And while she herself was history in motion, her cases broke down barriers as well. A defining vote on issues from women's and LGBTQ equality to the rights of people with disabilities, Justice Ginsburg consistently strove to create a better world.
Justice Ginsburg was above all a fighter. Now it's our turn to fight for her legacy. Just over one week ago, Donald Tdfrump released a list of potential Justices. Among the names are anti-LGBTQ activists, "religious-freedom" zealots, and transphobic bigots. Many of them are young, ensuring that if appointed they'll sit on the Supreme Court for decades. U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell has already stated that he will bring a vote to the Senate floor while Trump is in the White House - and anti-LGBTQ U.S. Senators are voicing their approval.
But as Justice Ginsburg herself once said, "the greatest menace to freedom is an inert people". Do not let McConnell and Trump's threats lull you into inertia - we have a fight to win. Right now, over 900 LGBTQ candidates are running for public office. It's likely that there's an LGBTQ candidate in your state running to repeal anti-LGBTQ laws and fight against a homophobic lawmaker. Now, more than ever, we need these candidates to win and form an essential firewall against whatever comes next. Our battle must continue. We cannot afford to lose.
If you are able to financially support pro-equality candidates, please do so. You can see and contribute to all our endorsed candidates here [[link removed]] . With the Supreme Court on the line, dark-money donors are going to be reaching into deep pockets. If you cannot donate, pro-equality campaigns will need volunteers. If you haven't made a plan to vote, do so now. Vote like your own life - or the life of someone you love - depends on it. More likely than not, it does.
There are 45 days until Election Day. Justice Ginsburg would want us to spend each and every one of them fighting. Let's get to work.
Be safe,
Mayor Annise Parker
