John,
I have no doubt you’ve heard the heartbreaking news. Tonight, Ruth Bader Ginsburg lost her long and courageously fought battle against cancer.
We’d expect nothing less than a valiant battle from RBG, the civil rights hero who built the field of women’s rights law in this country with her own two hands. Who served as a mentor and a hero to women and civil rights lawyers across the world.
RBG’s final wish was that her replacement to the Supreme Court would not be named until the new President is installed. The very same courtesy that Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham insisted on when Scalia passed away in March of 2016.
Yet tonight, within hours of her passing, Mitch McConnell has already issued a statement making it clear that he will hold a floor vote on her replacement.
And we don’t have to wonder where Lindsey Graham will stand on this issue, John.
He is on the record, on video even, that he will vote to replace a Supreme Court Justice in 2020. And he’s made it quite clear that he wants to replace RBG with someone who will follow in Brett Kavanaugh’s footsteps and attempt to end the Affordable Care Act.
Here’s the ray of hope in all of this though. Two GOP Senators have stated that they will wait to confirm a nominee. We must apply pressure at every level to make sure that Lindsey Graham, the Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, affords RBG the same consideration he gave to Justice Scalia.
John, this moment is urgent. Please add your name to demand that Lindsey Graham waits to confirm RBG’s replacement until after the new President is installed. And make it clear that he will be held accountable if he fails to do so. Add your name >>
Thank you,
Stephen Groves
