Dear California Democrats --

By now you’ve heard the gut wrenching news that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a hero and icon to us all, has passed away.

Words to describe Justice Ginsburg’s legacy do not come easily, but we must march forward in her honor.

Justice Ginsburg leaves behind an unmatched legacy in the pursuit for equality and justice.

She served on the Supreme Court for 27 years.

She was the second woman appointed to our nation's highest court.

She spearheaded the legal fight for women’s rights in the 1970s.

And perhaps most importantly, she has and always will be an inspiration to millions of Americans who refuse to accept the status quo in the march towards progress.

According to reports, days before her death, Justice Ginsburg told her granddaughter:

"My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed."

When I originally wrote this, I set out to write a commemoration of Justice Ginsburg’s life, not an urgent call to action.

But the more I reflect on the amazing life she led, the more certain I am: The best way to honor her legacy is to fight like hell for what’s right:

The next president must select Justice Ginsburg’s replacement. Please sign our petition if you agree. [[link removed]]

We can’t and won’t let Republicans take advantage of this tragedy to advance their agenda: restricting a woman’s right to choose, stripping Americans of health care, denying DREAMERs a chance at the American dream, stopping the march towards equality in its tracks, and too many other threats to name.

The California Democratic Party will do everything in its power to support those fighting to ensure Justice Ginsburg’s wish is granted. Senator Murkowski (R-Alaska) has already indicated she won’t vote for a replacement of Justice Ginsburg until after the election.

We need 3 Republican Senators to join her.

From the pandemic to the wildfires still raging, 2020 has been a painful year.

But we must persevere. Together, we will organize, communicate, and fight like hell for what’s right.

RBG would want no less.

If you’re with us, please sign our petition. We’ll follow up with specific actions you can take to ensure Republicans don’t take advantage of this tragedy to drag our country backwards. [[link removed]]
