In 2018 over 663,000 people were arrested for marijuana-related crimes, and according to a report by the ACLU, Black Americans are 3.6 times more likely to be arrested than white Americans despite similar consumption rates. That’s why it’s so disappointing that Democratic leadership in Congress just abandoned their plans to hold a vote on the MORE Act to decriminalize marijuana after bowing to pressure from police unions and the corporate-backed “moderates.” Our Revolution groups are working to pass marijuana legalization proposals in Arizona and New Jersey, and we stand against this decision from Democratic leadership. Rush a donation now to help us organize nationwide to build power and challenge Democratic leadership in the House so they’ll stop being scared of special interest groups, police unions, and their own shadows and pass this important bill!

Not only is marijuana’s demonized status a tool for racial oppression, but a path toward decriminalization is the rare issue in America that is supported by a majority of both Democrats AND Republicans. A common excuse we hear from corporate-backed politicians for abandoning things that would help working people is to cast doubt on its popularity. But a newly released Data for Progress survey “found that 59 percent of Americans—including 53 percent of Republicans and 70 percent of Democrats—favor the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment, and Expungement (MORE) Act.” It’s almost as if they are too scared of being attacked by police unions and Donald Trump to stand up and stop Black people from being disproportionately locked up for something which should be legal. Our Revolution stands firmly against such cowardly conduct. Instead, we put significant time and resources into electing progressive District Attorneys like Chesa Boudin, Larry Krasner, and Mike Schmidt who challenge oppressive systems like cash bail and racially biased policing. We are currently going all out to help Monique Worrell and Fanon Rucker win their races to do the same thing for their communities. Please donate here to help us elect progressive District Attorneys around the country who will challenge systemic racism and exploitation in our criminal justice system. In solidarity, The whole team at Our Revolution
