Dear John, 

In a campaign that should be about fighting for working families and strengthening our Commonwealth, GOP Senator Richard Stuart (Senate District 28) is attacking his challenger, our endorsee, Qasim Rashid on his faith.

We endorsed Qasim because he has a proven track record as a dedicated public servant who shares our values and vision of an inclusive and tolerant America. We support candidates who support civil liberties, minority rights and religious freedom - all things Qasim’s opponent, Richard Stuart, has failed to support. Instead, he has attacked Qasim for being a proud Muslim American. 

This type of intolerance and hate has no place in Virginia, much less in the Virginia legislature. It is the same intolerance and hate we see against our sisters Rashida and Ilhan. We as a community must push back against islamophobia and bigotry and support our Muslim sisters and brothers under attack.

This is what we see with almost every Muslim American running for office,” said Mohamed Gula, Emgage Virginia Executive Director. “I’m proud to support Qasim and am looking forward to electing the first ever Muslim American State Senator in Virginia.” 

We must support Qasim to help him win this Virginia State Senate seat. We must continue our fight to improve the lives of working Virginians and advancing the causes of justice and fairness.
