The first African-American woman ever elected to Congress, Shirley Chisolm said, "If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair."

But we cannot expect Congress to represent people of color if they aren't represented in Congress.

This is why South Carolina Democrats are proud to put forth the strongest and most diverse slate of down ballot candidates ever, including Melissa Watson who is running to replace Tom Rice in South Carolina's 7th Congressional District.

Born in Dillon, SC, Melissa is a working mom, educator and a veteran. She's exactly the type of person we should send to Congress. She's one of us.

We have made much progress in the last few years by electing leaders like Congresswomen Ayanna Pressley and Lauren Underwood, but the work is far from finished.

Through the Coronavirus and protests over racial injustice, we have seen again and again that when women of color lead, big change happens.

But women of color have a tougher road to office, every step of the way. In 2018, Black women running for House seats raised half as much money for their races as white women did for theirs.
