Our planet is suffering and it’s showing. Record-breaking fires have been raging across the world. Entire towns have been turned to ash in the western USA and abnormally warm temperatures in eastern Siberia have led to intense and widespread fires [1]. Flooding in Sudan has killed nearly 100 people and left thousands homeless [2]. And the impacts from storms like Hurricane Sally, which just reached the southern USA, are predicted to become more intense due to climate change [3]. 

 

Extreme weather costs lives and ruins livelihoods for thousands of people - and unless we act now, it’s only going to get worse.

 

The UK has promised to be a global leader in tackling the climate and nature emergencies. Over the next year the UK government needs to take serious action to do that.

 

Boris Johnson has a chance to be a true leader and tackle the climate and nature crises. Can you sign the petition to tell him to act on it now?

Alarm bells are ringing louder than ever. The ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are melting at “worst-case scenario” rates [4]. We’re witnessing unprecedented extreme weather events all over the world - and these events are predicted to become more extreme, and their impacts more severe, due to climate change. Vulnerable communities that are least responsible for the climate crisis and the destruction of nature are often hit the hardest. One million wildlife species are also facing extinction, many within decades [5]. 

 

Despite all this, some of the world's most environmentally damaging companies continue to delay commitments to reduce emissions and protect biodiversity. Some of the same companies lobby governments for weaker environmental laws. Things have to change and they need to change fast.

The threats facing the climate, our oceans and our forests are all connected. We can’t solve one without tackling them all. And next year we have a unique opportunity to do just that. 

 

In 2021, the UK is hosting the global climate summit, COP26. The UK Prime Minister must do all he can to urge governments around the world to commit to ambitious and urgent action to tackle the climate and nature crises. 

 

Extreme weather and loss of nature is only going to get worse unless leaders from around the world take decisive action now. It’s easy to feel helpless, but I’m here to tell you that together we are powerful and we can make a difference.
