John,
Atrocious reports emerged this week about medical abuse, including hysterectomies without consent, in ICE detention in the Irwin County Detention Center in Georgia. This is unacceptable—and the Council is ready to act on this systemic medical abuse.
For several years, the American Immigration Council has been documenting the government’s repeated failure to provide adequate medical care for the people in its custody at detention centers across the country. We have:
- Successfully advocated for increased oversight of medical care—in both ICE and CBP custody—and for the release of infants and their mothers from unsafe conditions in immigration detention.
- Filed multiple lawsuits demanding information on immigration enforcement’s steps to address COVID-19 outbreaks in its facilities and test and treat detained individuals who contract the virus.
- Called for an FBI investigation into the government’s failure to provide medical care to children in its custody.
We need to ramp up our efforts to stop medical abuse. Donate today.
Your donation helps the Council continue our current efforts and will:
- Increase access to lawyers to get women out of detention, including in Irwin County Detention Center with our partner Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative.
- Help ensure that no one is coerced into signing medical forms.
- Uncover and document legal claims related to medical abuse.
We cannot allow these medical atrocities to continue.
Sincerely,
Beth Werlin
Executive Director
