Join Seattle DSA and Decriminalize Seattle tomorrow to demand No Charity for Cops!
No Charity for Cops Rally!
Saturday, September 19th @ 2PM
Westlake Center: 400 Pine St
Since 2003, the Seattle Foundation has provided nearly $800,000 in grants to the Seattle Police Foundation (SPF), making it the largest single donor by far. These funds pay for riot gear, surveillance equipment, K9s, as well as training in violent crowd-control techniques used to suppress recent protests. Donations to SPF stand in contrast with the progressive image Seattle Foundation strives to project. And despite its supposed commitment to racial equity, the foundation gave less than 3% of its grants to BIPOC-led organizations in the past two years.
Join us at Westlake Center (400 Pine St) at 2pm on Saturday, September 19 to demand Seattle Foundation cut ties with the Seattle Police Foundation and increase investments in local BIPOC communities! Come out to hear speeches from Nikkita Oliver, State House candidate Sherae Lascelles, and King County Equity Now.
Invite your friends and share widely! Find the rally on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. And please consider arriving early at 1:15pm to help set up and prepare pickets if you can.
For more information about the Seattle Foundation and the Seattle Police Foundation, check out this twitter thread here. Make sure to follow DivestSPD on twitter for the latest research and actions on the movement to pressure companies and groups to divest from the Seattle Police Foundation.
While air quality levels are expected to improve significantly by Saturday, predictions aren’t always spot on. Please check Facebook or Seattle DSA Slack as we may need to cancel if smoke is in the “unhealthy” range or worse. We’ll make the call by 10am on Saturday.
No charity for cops! Defund SPD by 50%! Reinvest in Black and brown communities!
In solidarity,
Seattle DSA
