Institutional Catholic Response to Court Decision Permitting An End to Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Over 200,000 People

On September 15, 2020, Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles, President of the USCCB, Bishop Mario Dorsonville of Washington, USCCB Migration Committee Chairman, and Sean Callahan President and CEO Catholic Relief Services issued a statement responding to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in Ramos v. Wolf vacating an existing preliminary injunction or pause of the Trump Administration's attempt to terminate TPS for over 200,000 individuals living legally in the United States. The decision affects TPS holders from El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua and Sudan.

In the statement, they continued the call for Senate to take up HR 6, the American Dream and Promise Act, which provides Dreamers and TPS holders with a path to citizenship. Additionally, the Catholic leaders reiterated their solidarity with TPS holders and their families: "Our nation must not turn its back on TPS recipients and their families; they too are children of God. We stand in solidarity with TPS recipients, who are here and have been living and working in the United States legally, and we will continue to do so with them in their countries of origin."
