As cases rise, everyone must follow Covid rules

A Message from City Council Leader, Cllr David Mellen:

Cllr David Mellen, leader of Nottingham City Council

Last week there were over 100 new cases of Covid 19 in the city, which is the highest since May. Nationally there is concern about the surge in cases, which could result in further restrictions being imposed across the country. Six months into this pandemic, we clearly all need to take care not to become complacent – this remains a deadly virus which has claimed the lives of 41,705 people in this country. We all need to take personal responsibility to ensure we, or those around us, are not the next. The restrictions on our lives are frustrating but also vitally important – are you still observing the handwashing, face covering and social distancing guidelines properly? This weekend will be the first weekend where the Rule of Six applies banning social gatherings of more than six people both indoors and outdoors – please don’t be tempted to risk flouting it, as the potential consequences are simply not worth it. Find the latest Government guidelines here

Support for renters

Nottingham Skyline

The pandemic has highlighted how precarious and unaffordable the UK’s private renting system is. In these uncertain times it is essential that steps are taken to increase the security and rights of those living in private rented accommodation. I welcome the Government new legislation which provides additional support for renters this winter.

The main change is to the evictions process, requiring landlords to now need give renters six months' notice. Renters who receive notice will be able stay in their homes this winter and now have more time to find alternative support or accommodation. Find out more here

If you are in private rented accommodation you can also get support from Nottingham City Council’s Safer Housing Team – contact them at [email protected]

The Arboretum Garden Bar & Bandstand are throwing a closing party to celebrate the end of summer, from 4pm today. As well as a line-up featuring some of the best talent Nottingham has to offer, including Lewis Canner, Tori Sheard & Unknown Era, the event will feature street food from Nottingham Street Food Club.

Sunday is the last chance to visit the Ford Go Electric Roadshow in the Old Market Square. Chiming with our city’s ambition to be carbon neutral by 2028, you can find out about the science behind electrification technology and how you can reduce your CO2 emissions and your motoring running costs – and see some of Ford’s latest electric models up close.

Shanah tovah to everyone celebrating Rosh Hashanah in Nottingham

Today marks the start of a special weekend for everyone following the Jewish faith. It is Rosh Hashanah which is the Jewish New Year! Ordinarily people would be joining family and friends for prayers and celebrations. But the current Covid-19 restrictions on 'Rule of Six' makes gathering together impossible for larger groups.

Nottingham's Jewish communities, like the vast majority of Nottingham people, continue to be attentive to the government's safety guidance. I thank people for this. I know how frustrating the Covid-19 restrictions are. But we've got to trust that better times will come. Occasions such as Rosh Hashanah can still be special, but maybe just in a way that is slightly more simple or reflective.

However you are celebrating, on behalf of everyone at Nottingham City Council, I wish you a safe and joy filled weekend. We look forward to when we can be together again, Shanah Tovah Um'Tukah!
