Friend –
Today, a child in the Somali region of Ethiopia is feeling the pains of hunger, and unsure of when they'll next have a meal.
Their parents are farmers, and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there's no market to sell their animals or crops, and they can't travel to other towns to look for new jobs.
Even in the best years, the community struggles, with unpredictable weather providing consistent challenges to agriculture. But right now, COVID-19 is making it even more difficult for these farmers to feed their families.
Friend, this is the situation for many families in the Somali region of Ethiopia and around the world. And the situation is getting worse, not better. Just this week, the World Health Organization reported a record single-day increase in new COVID-19 cases worldwide.
This pandemic is the final straw for the millions already struggling with conflict, climate change, inequality, and a broken food system. We anticipate that by the end of the year, more people could die per day of hunger linked to COVID-19 than from the disease itself.
We urgently need to rush more support to areas experiencing poverty and hunger exacerbated by COVID-19 to save lives – before it's too late. That's why we've set a goal of raising $50,000 in the next 24 hours to send aid to the communities who need it most. We need the support of the Oxfam community – will you join us?
Our work isn't possible without the support of Oxfam community members like you. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Abby Maxman
