Friend,

Last week, Sen. Bernie Sanders published an Op-Ed that outlined his ambitious plans to save journalism, roll back media consolidation and find new ways to fund local news. Former Vice President Joe Biden, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, former Rep. John Delaney, and Sens. Amy Klobuchar, Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have all proposed big plans to fund broadband buildout. And nearly every candidate running for president (well, except for the incumbent) has voiced their support for Net Neutrality.

What do all these proposals have in common? They’re all things that Free Press Action has been fighting for and talking about for years.

We have a team of talented campaigners, organizers and advocates who are building coalitions and working with activists to make things happen. We’ve passed bills into law, stopped bad policy proposals in their tracks, and won critical protections in the courts. And we’ve won these important victories thanks to you.

And candidates are citing us as inspiration for their bold campaign ideas. Sanders’ Op-Ed discussed our work to stop media consolidation and increase media diversity as well as our proposal to tax targeted online ads to fund noncommercial media. We’ve spent years brainstorming solutions to create better and more accountable local journalism for our communities.

For social-change campaigners, policy wonks and activists like us, this is thrilling. We’ve been pushing for years to make media and tech issues part of the national political conversation. But the devil is always in the details — and we’re the ones who know the details it will take to actually do this right.

We can’t do this work without you: Chip in today and help Free Press Action fight for what it will really take to achieve visionary goals for everyone.

It’s going to take a lot more than proposals from presidential hopefuls to make these dreams a reality.

For example, If we want to get broadband to everyone in this country, we can’t just frame this as an issue affecting only rural residents. Seventy million people in this country — disproportionately low-income folks and people of color — don’t subscribe to broadband plans even though they live in areas where access is available. That’s because the biggest barrier to closing the digital divide is the steep cost of internet access.

To make much-needed policy proposals work for all people, we need to push policymakers to make sure people of color and vulnerable communities aren’t left out of the equation.

Getting from proposal to actual policy is always an uphill battle. But it’s one we’re uniquely positioned to achieve.

Free Press Action has expert policy analysts and lobbyists in D.C. who are here to fight for your best interests — not Comcast’s, Google’s, Verizon’s or Facebook’s.

Regardless of who wins the election, we need to win on these issues. Give what you can today to help us get there.
