Candace Valenzuela grew up in a military family. After her mother left the military, they struggled financially and, for a time, were left homeless. She became the first in her family to graduate from college after receiving a full scholarship. Her scholarship led to greater opportunities for her to pursue higher education, which her family would not have been able to afford on their own.

Candace’s experience inspires her fight for educational and housing opportunities for all families — that’s the kind of leadership we need in Congress.

Julie Oliver became a young mom at 17, and after dropping out of high school and living in abandoned buildings, she was able to go back to school through the opportunities afforded to her by Pell Grants and the Earned Income Tax credit. She put herself through school while working summer jobs and relied on Medicaid for prenatal care.

So when Julie’s opponent attacked healthcare for millions of Texans, she knew she had to run.
