Dear John,
One of Donald Trump's keys to victory in 2016 was his social media presence on Facebook and Twitter, where his huge following allowed him to push lies and misinformation unchecked by the traditional news media.
In fact, just days after Election Day, Trump's campaign director Brad Pascale, said, “Facebook and Twitter were the reason we won this thing." This year, Trump's secret weapon is YouTube.
As of September 1, Trump had outspent Biden two to one on YouTube. During the Democratic National Convention, he bought a huge ad that dominated YouTube's home page for four straight days.
In that time, five ads alone were seen 40 million times.
The latest polls have Trump and Biden in a virtual tie in crucial battleground states like Florida and North Carolina. Unless we act now, Trump's dominance on YouTube could swing this election just like Facebook did four years ago.
Inequality Media Civic Action is taking Trump's lies head on with high quality, sharable explainer videos, posted directly on YouTube, where his propaganda is being seen by millions. Will you make a donation to help power our operation over the crucial weeks ahead?
Trump is using his dominant position on YouTube to push the same kinds of lies and racist content he used to win in 2016, making false claims about vote-by-mail fraud, questioning Joe Biden's health and mental state, and falsely attacking peaceful protestors as “radical leftist mobs.”
Trump recently shared a blatantly doctored video that made it look like Joe Biden said, “You won't be safe in Joe Biden's America.” Too many Democrats assumed in 2016 that these kinds of misleading tactics wouldn't work. But we can't make that mistake again.
The team at Inequality Media Civic Action has spent the last four years testing the most persuasive arguments, and using the headlines of the day as a jumping off point to both debunk Trump's lies and make the case for our vision and policy solutions. Our videos change the frames through which people understand the system, giving them the tools to see what's at stake.
We're the only group consistently producing substantive explainers on key debates in this campaign, such as how the rising stock market doesn't mean the economy is working for everyday Americans.
This content is critical to help undecided voters make decisions based on facts, not propaganda — and to provide people like you with the information you need to convince family members, friends, and neighbors who aren't sure what's true and what's not.
But unlike Trump, we don't take millions in corporate money. We count on small donations from our grassroots supporters to power our work.
Will you donate today to help make sure we have the resources to counter Trump's lies and dominant position on YouTube?
Thank you for helping us get the truth out,
Robert Reich
