Make Mandatory E-Verify a Priority
With the surge in illegal immigration running up to the election, E-Verify is that much more important. According to the Pew Research Center, about 62% of 11 million undocumented aliens got here legally, but when their visas expire they simply disappear.
In his letter to the editor "The border wall will not solve our illegal immigration problem," John P. Calvert champions why every state needs E-Verify:
"E-Verify is voluntary, but 20 states have signed onto it so far. When it was adopted by Arizona (the first state to do so) its undocumented population fell by 92,000 as nervous migrants headed for safer territory. The Center for Immigration Studies has said that ''the E-Verify system is remarkably effective in deterring illegal immigration." In states that have adopted the program, illegal aliens seeking work have fallen by half.
With a national system in place, illegal immigration would likely decline everywhere. Most migrants come here to find jobs, and knowing that they were subject to verification might dissuade most of them from coming here in the first place. Many already here would likely self-deport if their current jobs should expire."
During the past few months, one of President Trump's biggest wins was forcing Tennessee Valley Authority executives to turn back their outsourcing commitment that would cost highly-skilled American workers their jobs.
In his op-ed "Meanwhile, down on the border," Joe Guzzardi, analyst and researcher with Progressives for Immigration Reform, explains:
"President Trump's wall-blustering is empty talk. Even if a wall were erected, the effect of deterring illegal immigration would be minor at best, and a flat zero for water arrivals. While talking about migrants in search of "economic opportunities," Morgan missed a chance to promote E-Verify which, since the program confirms individuals' lawful authorization to work, is a proven illegal immigration deterrent.
U.S. ineptitude at immigration enforcement is known to prospective migrants worldwide. Lynch's documentary featured a local CBS broadcaster who reported that the Miami sector alone had apprehended aliens from 64 nations."
Requiring the use of E-Verify nationally will curb illegal immigration while creating jobs and raising wages.
