Dear fellow MoveOn member,
In four days, millions of us will do what no king, no billionaire, and no authoritarian has ever been able to stop when enough people do it at once.
We’re going to raise our voices, and we’re going to vote.
This Saturday, October 17, is No Kings: Vote Early. The first three No Kings mobilizations sent a powerful message in the streets. Now we turn people power into voter power: gathering to vote early where we can, making a plan to vote where we can’t yet, and plugging into the local work of protecting the vote before Election Day.
MoveOn is one of the core organizations coordinating No Kings nationally, but it’s still $100,000 short of what it needs to finish the final organizing push before Saturday.
With just four days to go, will you chip in $9 right now to help MoveOn close its $100,000 gap and power No Kings: Vote Early?
Here’s what your donation does: MoveOn’s team works one-on-one with the volunteer hosts organizing events in every corner of the country. MoveOn sets them up, trains them, safety-plans with them, and makes sure every single event has what it needs to succeed. Your support pays for the last round of host trainings, safety planning, and the tools that connect people to voting and voter-protection work in their communities. MoveOn has been organizing huge, distributed days of action longer than anyone, and it does something no other group in the coalition is positioned to do.
Here’s why I’m asking, and why the timing matters so much.
Right now, what worries me most isn’t any one politician or any one billionaire trying to rig the results. It’s three quieter threats that could do more damage than all of them combined: complacency, defeatism, and cynicism.
Complacency says: Someone else will take care of it. There’s plenty of time. My one vote won’t make a difference. And then Election Day comes and goes, and millions of people who fully intended to vote never did.
Defeatism says: It’s already decided. The money is too big, the system too broken, the odds too long. Why bother?
Cynicism is the most dangerous of the three. It says: They’re all the same, nothing ever changes, voting is for suckers. Cynicism likes to dress itself up as sophistication. But it’s really just surrender with a smirk.
All three lead to the same place: People staying home. And all three are wrong.
That’s what makes October 17 so important. Voting early is the antidote to complacency, because you’re not waiting for someone else to do it. And when you vote alongside your neighbors, you see with your own eyes that you’re not alone, which is the antidote to defeatism and cynicism, too.
Please join me. Donate $9 to MoveOn now to help close the $100,000 gap and turn No Kings into a wave of early votes.
Every expansion of freedom in this country, from the end of child labor to women winning the vote to the civil rights movement, happened because ordinary people refused to believe that nothing could change. They showed up. Then they showed up again.
Power in America doesn’t belong to the people because it’s written down somewhere. It belongs to the people only when we use it. And the most powerful way to use it is to vote, together, in numbers too big to ignore.
The billionaires and politicians who’ve rigged this economy know that, which is why they’re working so hard to manipulate the election too: undermining trust in the vote, rolling back voting rights, making it harder to cast a ballot, and sowing chaos so people simply give up and stay home. They’re not counting on winning the argument. They’re counting on us getting complacent.
October 17 is how we answer them. And it’s why MoveOn’s work over these final four days matters so much.
I’ve been working in and around American politics and policy for more than 50 years. I’ve seen a lot of elections. And I’ve learned that the greatest threat to our democracy is rarely a single bad actor. It’s good people deciding their voices don’t matter. Don’t let anyone convince you of that.
In America, the people choose their leaders. Leaders don’t get to choose who votes. On Saturday, let’s prove it.
If you can, please chip in $9 to MoveOn today. MoveOn’s work is truly critical, and every dollar helps get more people to the polls on October 17 and beyond.
Thanks for all you do.
