Health Brief Tuesday, Oct 13, 2026
Today's Read Medicare enrollment opens in two days, and the 2027 numbers pull
in two directions. Average Medicare Advantage premiums are projected to fall
next year, while stand-alone prescription drug plans are getting a little more
expensive. Which side of that ledger you land on depends a lot on the plan you
pick.
The Numbers

Key Dates Oct 15 – Dec 7 Medicare open enrollment; changes take effect Jan 1
Going Down Advantage Premiums Average projected to dip from $14.37 to about $12
a month

Inching Up Part D Drug Plans Average premium about $36 a month, with a $700
deductible Also Coming ACA Marketplace Enrollment on HealthCare.gov opens Nov 1
The headline number is friendly, but it's an average. Federal estimates show
the typical Medicare Advantage premium falling by about 16.5% next year.
Averages can hide a lot, though. Your own plan, your county, and the doctors
and pharmacies you use all shape what you will actually pay.
Drug coverage deserves a second look. The average stand-alone Part D premium
is edging up by less than a dollar, but some plans are rising much more, and no
zero-premium options are expected for people who don't receive low-income help.
A plan that worked well for you this year may not be the best fit in 2027.
What's actually worth doing. If you do nothing, most plans simply renew into
next year's version, with its own premium, network and drug list. The official
Medicare Plan Finder at Medicare.gov lets you compare plans side by side using
your own medications and pharmacies, and it takes less time than most people
expect.
Editor's Note "The lowest monthly premium isn't always the lowest yearly cost.
It's worth checking the out-of-pocket limit and the drug list before you
decide."
