The IMF says AI investment keeps global growth above 3%, and that 47% of
economies were downgraded. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Macro

The IMF credits AI investment for holding global growth above 3%. It has also
modeled the unwinding

The IMF's October World Economic Outlook, published on October 13th in
Bangkok, forecasts global growth of 3.1% in 2026, a touch above July's 3.0%,
and 3.4% in 2027. Both are below 2025's 3.5%. The fund says strong AI
investment is offsetting the energy shock from the war in the Middle East,
which has kept oil above $100 a barrel. America is forecast to grow 2.3% in
both years, helped by consumption, tax cuts and AI investment, though the
import content of AI hardware reduces the boost. The euro zone's 2026 forecast
rose to 1.1% from 0.9%, and Britain's by 0.3 points to 1.3%, both on AI
investment.

The gains are not evenly shared. South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico and Thailand,
which supply AI hardware, were upgraded. Elsewhere the picture darkens. The IMF
has downgraded 47% of economies since April, including energy importers outside
AI supply chains. Just 32 countries now account for 95% of global growth,
against 54 in April. China's forecast edged down to 4.5% for 2026 and 4.0% for
2027, and Gulf forecasts were cut sharply. The AI surge also keeps upward
pressure on prices. Global inflation is forecast at 4.7% this year and 4.1%
next.

The fund has modeled the reversal too. In a faster-adoption scenario, global
GDP could be a further 0.6% higher by 2029, with most of the gain going to
America and China. In a correction scenario, as FourWeekMBA reads the report's
Box 1.2, unwinding AI investment directly cuts global GDP by as much as 0.4%
and investment by as much as 1.3% by 2028. Wealth effects and tighter financial
conditions deepen the hit to 0.6% of output, with spillovers into sovereign
bond markets. The fund's new chief economist, Silvana Tenreyro, said the world
economy has been resilient but that the resilience is under strain.

"The global economy has been resilient, but that resilience is under strain."
— Silvana Tenreyro, IMF chief economist

AI investment has moved from a sector story to a macro one. The IMF names it
as the prop under world growth, and models its unwinding as a scenario with a
number attached.
