Imagine it’s election night. Returns start trickling in as in-person voting gives Trump an apparent lead in key battleground states, but with millions of mail-in ballots yet to be counted. Trump, sensing an opportunity, takes to Twitter and begins to put pressure on Fox News, media elites, and state officials to call the election early and prematurely declare him the victor before the result is known.

2020 won’t look like any election in our history. It’s not an election day: It’s an election season. Americans are already casting their votes in some states, and the truth is it could take days or weeks to count all of the mail-in ballots. 

This is just one example of how Trump could try to contest the legitimate results of the election. That’s why Stand Up America, with our partners at Indivisible and 90+ other groups, are preparing to fight back. Through the Protect the Results coalition, we’ll be ready to launch nationwide protests in the days or weeks after the election if Trump tries to contest the results or declare victory before all the votes are counted.

We already have tens of thousands of Americans who have raised their hands to protect the results if the need arises. If Trump tries to apply corrupt pressure in the vote-counting process, we will meet it with firm, vocal resistance. Every single one of us has a role to play in preserving our democracy.

How can you help right now? Once you’ve signed up for Protect the Results yourself, spread the word about the coalition by sharing on social media. We don’t want Trump to go unchecked. We need your help letting your friends and family know that there’s a plan to mobilize:

I want to be very clear: None of this is written in stone. It’s possible Election Day and the days immediately after unfold without a major hitch. That’s more likely if you and everyone you know votes -- and votes early. 

Our number one priority must be turning out to vote in unprecedented numbers this election season. Whether you vote by mail, vote during an early voting period, or on Election Day, you MUST make sure you get your ballot in. Neither Trump’s baseless attacks on vote by mail or the pandemic can stop us from exercising our most fundamental right.

At the end of the day, it’s all of us -- we the people -- who determine whether our democratic institutions hold. There is power in numbers. Can you take a second to build our coalition and spread the word?
