Hi Team, here’s why it’s a big deal that the Supreme Court blocked the use of Missouri’s mid-decade congressional gerrymander.
This is what can happen when citizens are empowered, stay engaged, and commit to the struggle for our democracy. Against all the odds and facing a court system that has shown itself to bend over backward to favor Republicans, grassroots organizing still works.
It helps to take a step back to look at the full picture:
“While Missouri Republicans took directions from the White House instead of their own constituents, Missourians stood up for themselves and gave a resounding ‘NO’ to the power-hungry politicians trying to slice up their communities for partisan gain.
Citizens organized, protested, and took this fight all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court — not once, not twice, but three times — and they won the fight to block the installation of an egregious mid-decade gerrymander for the 2026 midterms. Because of their tenacity, Missourians will continue to vote in this election on a fairer congressional map that keeps Kansas City together.”
—Eric H. Holder, Jr.
82nd Attorney General of the United States
The plaintiffs in the case were backed by the full force of the fair maps movement— which played a crucial role in securing the victory. When Republicans launched this attack, they had no idea how hard the people would fight back.
Now, as they continue to threaten our rights, we must never forget the lesson from Missouri: United, we are more powerful than anti-democracy special interests. In A.G. Holder’s words:
“The story of the fight for democracy in Missouri is an example for the nation as we continue the struggle to protect the right to vote. There is no cavalry coming to save us — we, the people, are the cavalry.”
The NDRC is going toe to toe with the Republican threats to democracy and fighting back against attempts to erode its most basic functions, especially the right to vote.
We have just a matter of a few weeks to make major headway toward that goal — in Missouri, that means passing the citizen-led referendum to reject the 2025 gerrymander for good. And across the country, we’re supporting over 300 pro-democracy candidates on the ballot in key state-level races.
We’re counting on your support to give those top electoral priorities a boost right now, when it matters most. Will you make a donation in the critical weeks leading up to the midterms? [[link removed]]
