The NFA news everyone has been waiting on landed Friday. The ATF will no longer require approval or registration for suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, and AOWs, nationwide, effective October 9. Not just for the plaintiffs in the Texas case. Everyone. You can build or buy one without waiting on a Form 1 or Form 4. You still fill out a 4473 at the counter, prohibited persons are still prohibited, and machine guns are untouched. Read the whole thing before you celebrate though, because the letter lists five things that did not change, and the last one is the trap: state law. If your state’s NFA exception is written around federal registration, a can that’s fine with ATF can still be a felony at home. ATF will still take a voluntary Form 1 or Form 4, and in some states that may be the only way to stay inside the exception. Get a lawyer’s eyes on your state code first.
FPC is already working that problem. Its lawyers sent letters to the attorneys general of Alaska and 14 other states whose laws tie suppressor and SBR legality to the federal process, asking them to stop enforcing now while legislatures repeal. Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Wisconsin are the other 14. It’s a letter, not a court order, and nobody has answered yet. A federal win you can’t use at home isn’t finished.
Maine quietly stopped honoring permits from Arkansas, Indiana, South Dakota, and Tennessee, four states that still honor Maine’s permit, and nobody has said why. Maine law says it recognizes any state that recognizes Maine, no agreement needed. The statute didn’t change. The four states didn’t change. The list did. I’ve updated the reciprocity maps and asked the State Police for an answer. Maine is permitless carry, but a recognized permit still matters there: without one you have to declare on police contact, and only permit holders can carry in state parks.
New product to tell you about. PewCulture sent me a set of their travel tags, I made a video about them, and then we got to talking. Long story short, I liked them enough that we worked out a deal to white label them, and I put in an order for 100 sets. USA Carry Travel Tags are the exact same tags in that video and article, just with the USA Carry logo on them. I finally have them in hand and all pre-orders have been shipped. They are already selling fast, so get in while the first run lasts.
For years I tracked round counts in a spreadsheet. Armorer is what I built instead. Service logs, service intervals, magazines, and serial numbers locked behind zero-knowledge encryption that even I can't read. Available on iOS and Android. Get your collection in now, because I've got a big update dropping next week that makes logging a range trip a whole lot faster.
