There is no check coming. Paying 270 million adults $5,000 each would cost about $1.35 trillion, more than three times everything the government collected in tariffs last year. The White House hasn’t said where the money would come from, and Republicans like Rand Paul and Chip Roy have already said they won’t vote for it.
It’s all a lie, but Trump doesn’t care. He’s at 30 percent approval and on track to lose the House, and losing it means subpoenas, oversight, and a Congress that can finally tell him no.
It could work. Democrats are ahead on every indicator, but that lead only counts if people vote. The voters Trump is targeting are the ones hit hardest by his prices and the ones campaigns contact least. A voter who is behind on rent will see “$5,000” on their phone long before anyone explains the math.
If this works, Trump keeps Congress for two more years, and nobody in Washington can stop him. Every Republican after him will also learn that you can drive up what families pay, promise them a check you never send, and hold your majority anyway.
