What is the current state of high school graduation in our country? How are young people experiencing high school this year?

The convening partners of the GradNation campaign ([link removed])—America’s Promise Alliance, The Alliance for Excellent Education, Civic, and the Everyone Graduates Center at Johns Hopkins University—invite you to join us on Thursday, October 1, 1:30 – 3:00 pm ET to explore these questions and other top-of-mind issues related to high school graduation during this unprecedented school year.

The most recent data indicate an 85.3 percent national graduation rate for 2018—a new all-time high—but this year’s report comes at a difficult time for our country. Widespread uprisings in response to systemic racism have generated a demand to more explicitly address longstanding inequities in our education system. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated those inequities while bringing about an array of new, pressing challenges. The GradNation campaign is committed to helping schools, communities, and youth-supporting institutions meet the demands of the current moment so that every young person reaches the graduation milestone college- and career-ready.

This year’s event will feature the perspectives of lead researchers, young people from across the country, and three former U.S. Secretaries of Education, including:

Robert Balfanz, Principal Investigator and Researcher, Everyone Graduates Center at Johns Hopkins University School of Education

John Bridgeland, Founder and CEO, Civic

Kelem Butts, Director of Charitable Operations, AT&T

Arne Duncan, Founder & Managing Partner, Chicago Cred; former Secretary of Education (2009-2015)

John B. King Jr., President and CEO, The Education Trust; former Secretary of Education (2016-2017)

Margaret Spellings, President & CEO, Texas2036; former Secretary of Education (2005-2009)

Tyler J. Swanson, Special Education Teacher, Enloe Magnet High School in North Carolina

High school and college students from across the U.S.

Speakers will share insights from the 2020 Building a Grad Nation report, authored by Civic and the Everyone Graduates Center, as well as diverse perspectives on the challenges and opportunities of high school completion in our country’s current environment. Speakers will also discuss the new “Meeting the Moment” plan—a targeted effort focused on supporting states with the most non-graduates.
