This week Trump told reporters that the latest mass shooting in Odessa "really hasn't changed anything" about the gun reform conversation when it comes to changing legislation. I don't say this often, but the President is right. Nothing has changed when it comes to moving commonsense gun safety measures forward, like universal background checks, closing gun show loopholes and supporting red flag laws.
Mitch McConnell is hiding behind the President refusing to do anything until Trump takes a position. This inaction is infuriating.
I’m sick of losing countless lives to senseless gun violence, and I know you are too. But there is some good news.
The good news is that conversations within our communities are changing. Our culture is changing. Companies are changing. Just this week, Walmart announced they will discontinue sales of short-barrel rifle ammunition, discontinue sales of handgun ammunition and discontinue handgun sales entirely in Alaska. Kroger joined Walmart to ask customers to also refrain from openly carrying firearms in its stores.
These changes come after many deadly shootings this summer, and after choruses of your voices and employees' voices have risen to demand change.
Your demands for action are being heard. Now is the time to keep up the pressure on politicians, like Mitch McConnell, to support gun safety reforms. Our commonsense, bipartisan bills would bring needed changes that are overwhelmingly supported by Americans across the country.
As both the Senate and Congress return from recess next week, know that I'll be fighting my hardest to ensure these measures are brought to a vote. No more lives lost.
Continue to speak out. Then speak louder. I'm with you.
