Election Guidance for Mosques & Nonprofits

With less than 50 days until the November election, your mosque, community organization or nonprofit may be considering participating in election-related activities.

That’s why we’re sharing this Election Guide for Mosques & Nonprofits that we co-authored with the Alliance for Justice. Download it and share it with your community.

In general, religious communities and other 501(c)(3) organizations are allowed to raise awareness of an issue, educate the public about a candidate’s views, and encourage the public to vote. These groups, however, are not allowed to support or oppose a candidate running for office. That’s just the most basic premise, each rule comes with caveats and specifics.

Get tips on how to navigate these election-related rules without getting in trouble.

Can your Imam endorse a candidate? Can your youth group create posters criticizing a candidate? Can your community invite a candidate to speak?

All of these questions can feel overwhelming. I’m hopeful this Election Guide will give you the answers you need to participate in the democratice process with confidence. After all, we need you and your community to vote!
