John,

Right now, the Trump administration is illegally detaining children without providing even the most basic necessities like soap or toothbrushes. We're fighting back to protect these children's human rights and ensure they are treated with compassion and care. I have joined a coalition of 20 state Attorneys General in filing a lawsuit opposing Trump's new rule which seeks to circumvent existing child welfare laws to indefinitely detain children.

We argue that the rule:

* eliminates critical guaranteed protections guaranteed, specifically: longer detention periods rule will inflict irreparable harm to children, their families, and communities nationwide;

* interferes with a state's ability to ensure the health, safety, and overall welfare of children;

* will result in a vast expansion of family detention centers, which will not require state licenses and have been shown to cause increased trauma in children and youth;

* and it violates the Due Process Clause of the United States Constitution

You can get involved in this movement. I've also co-sponsored a petition to defend the children in detention. Add your name now to defend immigrant children's human rights.

Thank you for standing with us,
