John, there’s a certain reality that comes with running for governor as a Black man in the South.
I want to share with you something that happened to me recently. But first, I have to ask: Will you chip in any amount you can to help me make history as South Carolina’s first Black governor? [[link removed]]
John, here’s the latest racist message to hit my inbox:

I wish I could tell you it was shocking. The truth is, I’ve received hate like this almost every day since I started running to become the first Black governor of South Carolina.
And every time it happens, I’m reminded why staying silent has never been an option for me.
If you believe we have to confront this kind of hatred instead of looking the other way, will you stand with me today by chipping in $10, $25, or whatever you can to our campaign? [[link removed]]

I’ve encountered racism throughout my life, long before I ever ran for governor.
And I’ve seen another version of it inside the South Carolina State House, where politicians can shake my hand, call me a colleague and a friend, then turn around and support policies that I believe disproportionately hurt Black South Carolinians.
When Republicans pushed their anti-DEI agenda, I stood on the House floor and challenged it directly. I asked my colleagues which part of diversity they opposed. Which part of equity they opposed. Which part of inclusion they opposed.
I wasn’t willing to stay quiet then, and a racist sitting behind a keyboard certainly isn’t going to silence me now.
I will call out racism when I encounter it. I will tell the truth even when doing so makes powerful people uncomfortable. And when a moment demands clarity, you will never have to wonder where I stand.
South Carolina has never elected a Black governor. If we win this November, we have the opportunity to make history together. But making history means confronting the people who would rather see someone like me retreat, stay quiet, or believe that South Carolina isn’t ready for change. If you’re ready to rise above this hate and help us build a South Carolina where every person is treated with dignity, please chip in $10, $25, or whatever you can today. [[link removed]]

Let’s make sure hate doesn’t get the final word.
Thank you for standing with me,
Jermaine

I wasn’t born into power — I fought my way into it. I'm not a career politician or a wealthy insider. I'm a husband, father, and fighter who knows what it’s like to grow up with nothing and still keep pushing forward.
