and how can PAAC improve its Board engagement? Port Authority's return to full fares hits low-income riders hardest. Join the rally on Tuesday to release a new report & demand COVID fare relief now! Port Authority's return to full fares his hitting low-income riders the hardest during the middle of a pandemic and economic depression. It is also pushing riders off transit as the agency is struggling to regain riders. Join PPT Tuesday, 11:30am, at the Wilkinsburg Busway Station, to release a report that demonstrates how an emergency low-income fare program would support riders and our transit system. This is a win-win that Port Authority cannot afford to delay. Our riders, our system, our city is calling for an emergency low-income fare program now! Rally is being in-person. Masks and social distance required. It will also be streamed on-line. Join the Masked Rally! How can Port Authority improve its Board Engagement Policies? PPT has some recommendations. COVID has shown us that there has never been a greater need to listen authentically to the people who are riding transit. The Transit Riders who are riding transit now are the essential riders who are experts on the system. However onerous requirements, inaccessible meeting formats, and other barriers keep these riders from ever sharing their expertise with the Board. PPT Members took two months to draft this comprehensive analysis of opportunities and best practices for the Port Authority Board to improve its engagement policy and bring more riders to the table. By working together we can build a better system for all. Read these recommendations TRUST Riders, Fund Transit! October 6th National Day of Action Organized by Emerging Coalition of Transit Rider Unions The pandemic has revealed that transit is an essential public utility, and that current funding structures leave it precarious. TRUST is an emerging coalition of Transit Rider Unions from across the country that is organizing for improved funding and service. TRUST members will use this national and decentralized day-of-action to elevate the demands of riders, push for a national transit funding stimulus, and further local organizing campaigns. Pittsburghers are encouraged to sign up below to take part in this day of transit rider solidarity and action. Before Congress walked away from negotiations around a second COVID stimulus, riders and workers from across PA have made our demand clear: we want state Senators to push for $32B to keep transit systems and our economy running. This struggle for federal transit funding will continue into the Fall, but the good news is that the statewide network of transit riders and workers is growing across PA. Hundreds of riders from over a dozen PA transit agencies have started their organizing. This network will be critical in both the state-level and the federal-level advocacy around building better local transit systems. Read more The system ain't gonna change itself!
