Happy Mexican Independence Day! Today reminds us of the history of a country we are deeply connected to and the contributions of Mexican-Americans in the United States.

For me, it’s a chance to honor my parents — my father, who came to this country with the bracero program, and my mother who joined him in Chicagoland with my siblings and me in search of opportunity.

And while the parade won’t go on as planned this year, we can still celebrate our community, our heritage, and our diversity. Together, let’s continue to organize and make our voices heard at the ballot box this November.
