Tell Congress: Give patients more control over their health care.
<[link removed]>
Hello John,
More choice. Less red tape. More control for patients.
For roughly 75 million Americans with access to health savings accounts,
Washington just removed a major barrier to direct primary care.
Beginning January 1, people in certain direct primary care arrangements can:
* Keep contributing to an HSA
* Use HSA dollars tax-free for qualifying DPC membership fees
* Choose a simpler way to pay for routine medical care
It may sound like a technical tax change. But it could give millions of
Americans another way to take control of their health care.
Speak up: Ask Congress to support patient choice.

Support more direct patient care reforms

So, what is direct primary care?
The idea is simple: Patients pay doctors, not insurance companies, for routine
care.
Instead of billing an insurer for every visit, a patient pays a doctor a fixed
monthly fee for an agreed-upon set of services.
Think of it like a subscription for primary care.
Depending on the practice, that can include:
* Physicals and routine visits
* Vaccinations and urgent care
* Lab tests
* Treatment for common illnesses
* Telehealth and referrals
* Discounts on some generic drugs
The result: fewer middlemen between you and your doctor.
DPC doctors typically offer same-day or next-day appointments and, on average,
spendfour times as much time with each patient as traditional insurance-based
physicians do.
That can mean more time for care and less time spent navigating insurance
paperwork.
But federal rules used to get in the way.
The IRS generally treated DPC membership as additional health coverage. For
many patients, choosing DPC meant losing the ability to contribute to an HSA,
even if they otherwise had an HSA-qualified insurance plan.
The Working Family Tax Cuts changed that.
Under the new rules, qualifying DPC arrangements no longer automatically
disqualify someone from contributing to an HSA. Patients can also use HSA funds
for qualifying DPC membership fees of up to $150 a month, tax-free.
Choice works best when patients get to decide.
DPC can reduce administrative costs, make prices easier to understand, and
give doctors more time with patients. And patients can decide for themselves
whether a DPC practice is worth the monthly fee.
That’s how health care should work: more options, more transparency, more
competition, and more control for patients.
The new law doesn’t force anyone into direct primary care. It simply removes a
federal barrier that made choosing it harder.
AFP activists helped make this reform possible. It took years of persistence,
but they kept speaking up and Washington listened.
Now, millions of Americans are about to have another option.
Sometimes health care reform means creating something new. Sometimes it means
getting government and insurance companies out of the way.
This DPC reform is an important step. But it’s only one part of our larger
Personal Option campaign to give every American reliable, hassle-free health
care they can afford.
Tell Congress to support direct patient care reform if you believe patients
should have more choice and control. Make your voice heard.
