It is astounding that we have to say this, but forced sterilization is an abuse of human rights.

Yet that's what is happening right here in Georgia, right now, courtesy of the Trump administration.

A whistleblower recently came forward revealing that immigrant women detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement at Irwin County Detention Center are being given hysterectomies -- an invasive surgical procedure that results in sterilization -- without their informed consent. These women were robbed of their ability to have children by the country in which they sought safety, opportunity, and hope.

This is unacceptable. It is an atrocity. And we cannot remain silent.

Here at Our American Dreams, we are so proud to support candidates running for office to change our state's anti-immigrant policies and fight for immigrant rights.

These women represent one of the best parts of the American Dream -- that those who seek freedom, hope, and a better life for their families can find it here on our shores. But the Trump administration is determined to make their stories impossible for the next generation. They have refused to hold ICE accountable for the appalling conditions, lack of medical care, and forced sterilization in their facilities, so we must elect leaders who will stand up to ICE and demand an end to these human rights violations.

We must elect leaders who truly understand that human rights are universal, no matter the country of your birth or the color of your skin.

We must elect leaders who believe that the United States should be a country that welcomes immigrants and asylum seekers. Immigrants have helped build this nation and contribute so essentially to its success, and we have a moral responsibility to aid those escaping poverty, violence, famine, and disaster.

We must be a country where immigrants can come to build a better life, not fear persecution, degradation, and imprisonment. Our candidates will lead with compassion and defend the dignity of immigrants.
