There is perhaps no organization in the world today with more innocent blood on its hands than Hezbollah. At the same time, there is no terrorist organization that has attained a higher level of international legitimacy with its "political wing" operating with impunity on the European continent. Earlier this year, Germany and Lithuania shocked the world and joined the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and various other states in banning Hezbollah in its entirety. Following the devastating explosion in Beirut on August 4, the Lebanese people are increasingly calling for an end to Hezbollah’s exploitation of Lebanon's ports and borders and its sway over corrupt governments, which it uses to fund and arm itself. Will the EU under Germany’s presidency finally classify all of Hezbollah as a terrorist group? Will other European countries follow Germany's and Lithuania's lead and take domestic action against this dangerous group? How can the U.S. and like-minded allies make the case for the full designation of Hezbollah as a terrorist organization?
Join Ambassador Nathan Sales, the U.S. State Department’s Coordinator for Counterterrorism; Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP, Britain’s Chancellor of the Exchequer (2019-2020) and Home Secretary (2018-2019); and Hans-Georg Engelke, German State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of the Interior, to help answer these questions and more.
