CCL volunteers
publishing op-eds on
wildfires, hurricanes

Between the unprecedented wildfires out West and the record hurricane season in the East, the link between climate change and catastrophic weather has never been clearer. And CCL volunteers are telling their personal stories about dealing with disasters in op-eds that provide a powerful call to action for climate solutions.

Last week, CCL’s communications team posted two op-ed templates — one for wildfires and one for hurricanes — and invited volunteers to add their own personal stories about enduring the devastating consequences of climate change. Two op-eds have already been published in Redlands and Redding, California.

Elected officials and the media in California aren’t mincing words when it comes to connecting the dots between the wildfires and climate change. The front-page headline in the Los Angeles Times proclaimed, “California’s climate apocalypse.” Along the Gulf Coast, Hurricane Sally is soaking the South and causing floods only weeks after Hurricane Laura tore through Texas and Louisiana.

With so much attention focused on climate-fueled disasters, Congress will be sensitive to constituents demanding action, especially if it comes in a public forum like a newspaper op-ed.

If you or someone in your group has a story to tell, we invite you to use the current op-ed templates to share that story and submit an op-ed to your local newspaper. The templates are available in both English and Spanish, so be sure to consider Spanish-language outlets in your area, too. Check with your group leader to avoid duplicating efforts within your chapter.

Other news:

New video about who we are: On Saturday’s national call, we debuted a 2-minute video we’re calling CCL’s manifesto: “We look our biggest problems in the eye and insist we can solve them.” Watch and share this inspiring, uplifting video on Facebook.

Delaney joins CCE board: Former Democratic Congressman and presidential candidate John Delaney has joined Citizens’ Climate Education’s governing board. “As a member of Congress, I was able to see firsthand the rapid growth, tenacity, and effectiveness of this grassroots organization, and I’m proud to join their efforts to fight climate change,” said Delaney. Read more in our press release.

CCL Canada turns 10: Last week CCL Canada celebrated its 10th anniversary. Among the many achievements during the last decade is the organization’s role in getting Canada to adopt a carbon fee and dividend policy to price carbon. CCL’s International Outreach Manager Cathy Orlando shares more in this op-ed.

Marshall Saunders honored: Thanks to two anonymous donors, the University of California San Diego is honoring CCL founder Marshall Saunders by instituting the Marshall Saunders Chancellor’s Endowed Chair in Global Climate Policy and Research. Marshall passed away last December. The first holder of this chair is Jennifer Burney, an environmental scientist whose research focuses on simultaneously achieving global food security and mitigating climate change.

If you have a little time: Invite people you know to watch the recording of our September national call with guest speaker Tina Johnson, Director at the National Black Environmental Justice Network. On the call, Tina talked about how disproportionate numbers of Black people become sick due to environmental inequalities and how the network is fighting for environmental justice. Consider watching with them on Zoom so you can discuss these issues after the call.

If you have more time: Attend this online workshop Thursday evening on How to Give Motivational Climate Presentations. The workshop is a free, high impact one-hour training to introduce women speakers to motivational presenting. Though this workshop is primarily designed for women, all are welcome to attend.

Thank you to our 2020 Climate Guardians

Between COVID, our national reckoning on racial injustice, upcoming elections, wildfires, and hurricanes, 2020 has been quite a trying year. At some point this year, many of us have experienced a heavy despair that tells us to give up, that these problems are just too big, and there’s nothing more we can do.

Luckily, CCL provides a place of refuge, somewhere to find connection, gratitude, and optimism. Somewhere to recharge in order to continue onward. Whatever comes our way, we CCLers remain steadfast in choosing to believe that climate change is something we can solve together.

Our hopeful work wouldn’t be possible without the unwavering commitment of our 2020 Climate Guardian Donors, who provide support at the level of $10,000 or more. Gifts from Climate Guardian Donors make up approximately half of all donations from individuals to CCL and sister organization Citizens’ Climate Education each year, and their leadership helps inspire others to give generously by matching all monthly donations. Our donors, led by the Climate Guardians, allow CCL staff to provide the up-to-date training, tools, support and events that help us all keep pushing forward in difficult times.

Even more, they provide a powerful example of hope by putting their money where their optimism is. So to our Climate Guardians, we say THANK YOU! We literally could not do this work without you.

Chapter development: Social media graphics

Using social media can help grow and develop CCL chapters, and good graphics announcing meetings and special events can raise the visibility of social media posts. To help you create graphics that are clean, good looking and reflect the CCL brand, we’ve created a number of easy-to-use templates (like the one above) to create graphics for various social media platforms. Access the templates through this Community page.

CCL volunteers are regularly activating the “five levers” of political will in their communities. If you’d like to learn more about how to pull the chapter development lever, watch or read the trainings on Social Media for Volunteers & Chapters.
