publishing op-eds on
wildfires, hurricanes
Between the unprecedented wildfires out West and the record hurricane season in the East, the link between climate change and catastrophic weather has never been clearer. And CCL volunteers are telling their personal stories about dealing with disasters in op-eds that provide a powerful call to action for climate solutions. Last week, CCL’s communications team posted two op-ed templates — one for wildfires and one for hurricanes — and invited volunteers to add their own personal stories about enduring the devastating consequences of climate change. Two op-eds have already been published in Redlands and Redding, California. Elected officials and the media in California aren’t mincing words when it comes to connecting the dots between the wildfires and climate change. The front-page headline in the Los Angeles Times proclaimed, “California’s climate apocalypse.” Along the Gulf Coast, Hurricane Sally is soaking the South and causing floods only weeks after Hurricane Laura tore through Texas and Louisiana. With so much attention focused on climate-fueled disasters, Congress will be sensitive to constituents demanding action, especially if it comes in a public forum like a newspaper op-ed. If you or someone in your group has a story to tell, we invite you to use the current op-ed templates to share that story and submit an op-ed to your local newspaper. The templates are available in both English and Spanish, so be sure to consider Spanish-language outlets in your area, too. Check with your group leader to avoid duplicating efforts within your chapter.
