African Americans are a key moral center of our country, friend. From the abolitionist movement to the civil rights movement, Black people and other folks of good conscience have centered us on the right side of history. African descendants of slavery also defined and uplifted America through their economic strength and innovation. But systemic racism, exclusion, and discriminatory policies have decimated Black wealth generation and prosperity. Reparations aim to redress this injustice.
I’m proud to support Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee’s effort to pass H.R. 40. It would develop a proposal for Reparations for the institution of slavery and its impact on living African descendants of slavery. The ugly legacy of slavery, Jim Crow segregation, and legalized institutional racism have intentionally concentrated wealth and political power in white people’s hands. Reparations are about righting those egregious wrongs, but they are also about laying the foundation for a genuinely prosperous America. Rather than look at wealth as a zero-sum game, Reparations help build a thriving economy and equitable society for all by uplifting the Black community.
