John — The Republican Party is waging a full-scale attempt to capture the Supreme Court and the federal judiciary. This effort is most notably demonstrated by Mitch McConnell’s unprecedented refusal to even consider President Barack Obama’s nominee to the Court, Merrick Garland, and continues with hyper partisan appointments of extreme right wing nominees Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.
With women’s reproductive rights, protections for LGBTQ+ Americans, and access to affordable health care sure to be on the docket, the Supreme Court will weigh in on some critical issues in the next few years.
So you can imagine our concern when Trump flouted a short-list of potential Supreme Court nominees for his second term — of which two of the names were Ted Cruz and Tom Cotton.
John, you heard that right. Senator Ted Cruz has veered even further right throughout the Trump presidency, threatening to dismantle protections for reproductive rights and blindly following in Trump’s footsteps.
Not to be outdone, Sen. Tom Cotton lacks any judicial experience to prepare him to competently serve as a Supreme Court justice. In just the past 6 months, he has called for military troops to quell peaceful protests and infamously called slavery a “necessary evil.”
Are these the men we want weighing in on our nation’s most pressing court decisions? John, we need to hear from you!
Who do you think should be a Supreme Court justice?
John, this is the future we have in store with another four years of President Trump. And it’s up to us to organize, mobilize, and vote if we want to keep this a fantasy — not our reality.
