How does your state stack up? On Tuesday, September 22, at 1:00 p.m. EDT, the Treatment Advocacy Center will host a virtual conversation on the findings of its forthcoming report card, “Grading the States: An Analysis of U.S. Psychiatric Treatment Laws,” which examines the state laws that provide for involuntary treatment for psychiatric illness. The report will be released on Tuesday, September 22 ahead of the discussion. Whether a person receives timely, appropriate treatment for an acute psychiatric crisis or chronic psychiatric disease is almost entirely dependent on the state that person is in when the crisis arises. While some states have notable gaps between strong laws and poor implementation, the right laws provide a necessary foundation for states to build systems that promote long-term wellbeing. The report provides a blueprint for advocates and policymakers working to reform state mental health laws. The conversation will be moderated by Sabah Muhammad, JD, legislative and policy counsel with the Treatment Advocacy Center and co-author of “Grading the States: An Analysis of U.S. Psychiatric Treatment Laws.” Joining Sabah as panelists will be: Lisa Dailey, JD, LLM, director of advocacy at the Treatment Advocacy Center and co-author of “Grading the States: An Analysis of U.S. Psychiatric Treatment Laws.” She previously litigated human and civil rights cases, including pro bono work with refugees. Jeffrey Lieberman, MD, Lawrence C. Kolb professor and chairman of the department of psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, director of the New York State Psychiatric Institute, and psychiatrist-in-chief of the Columbia University Medical Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Teresa Pasquini, founding member of the Behavioral Healthcare Partnership at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez, California, co-founder of Mental Illness FACTS/Right 2 Treatment, a grassroots campaign focused on quality standards and equity in care for serious mental illnesses, and longtime advocate for reforming and improving the U.S. mental health system Brian Stettin, JD, policy director at the Treatment Advocacy Center and co-author of “Grading the States: An Analysis of U.S. Psychiatric Treatment Laws.” He formerly served as Assistant New York State Attorney General, where he was instrumental in conceiving and drafting “Kendra’s Law,” landmark legislation establishing Assisted Outpatient Treatment in New York. We hope you will join us Tuesday and encourage you to submit questions for consideration at [email protected]. Panelists will answer selected questions during the question and answer portion of the webinar.
