Today I want to take a moment to celebrate the birthday of this sweet, beautiful, brilliant woman who I am proud to call my mother -- Nancy Gardner Sewell.
The first Black woman to serve on the Selma City Council, the retired head librarian of Selma High School, and a lifelong advocate for education and children -- she has always served as a beacon of hope in our community, teaching us to lead with knowledge, fight with perseverance, and to never be satisfied with the status quo.
I stand on her shoulders and walk in her footsteps as the first Black woman elected to represent Alabamaβs 7th Congressional District, and I am blessed and grateful to have had a lifetime of learning from her wisdom and strength.
