Dear John,
Australia needs a migration system that puts Australia first.
Since Labor was elected, it has brought in 1.5 million people over four years. That’s roughly the population of Adelaide.
Right now we’ve got nearly 3 million temporary visa holders in our country. That’s the highest number in our nation’s history. This is unsustainable.
When migration numbers are too high, our housing, infrastructure and services simply can’t keep up.
We need a migration system that works for Australia first.
The Nationals will cut net overseas migration to 100,000 a year for two years, before levelling out at around 160,000 in year four.
We will also cap migration to the number of new homes built.
We will bring in the skilled visas we need to build the homes that Australians are so desperate for.
We will make sure temporary visas are genuinely temporary.
We will protect regional migration programs that support agriculture, health, tourism and hospitality.
And we will make sure that the people that come here share our values.
We have fixed Labor’s migration mess before when we stopped the boats, and we’ll fix it again by taking back control and putting Australians first.
