To the Good People of New York’s Ninth Congressional District,

This past week, we commemorated the 19th Anniversary of the tragic 9/11 attacks.

May we never forget the lives of those we lost and the sacrifices of the heroes who ran into harm’s way to prevent any further loss of life. Among the casualties suffered were 26 brave firefighters from my own district who lost their lives on 9/11. My prayers are with their families and the families of all of those who suffered a loss.

As we are now just over two weeks away from the end of Census data collection, it is crucial that you and your family are counted, so that our district can get the resources it needs. My team and I have partnered with the COJO of Flatbush, Marine Park JCC, and Crown Heights JCC over the last few weeks to ensure that you can get counted. Further information is listed below:

COJO of Flatbush - 1523 Avenue M, Brooklyn, NY 11230

Hours: Thursday, August 20 - September 24, 2020, from 10:00 AM - 11:00 PM

Marine Park JCC - 1102 Coney Island Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11230

Hours: Thursday, August 20 - September 24, 2020, from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Crown Heights JCC - 387 Kingston Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11225

Hours: Friday, August 21 - September 25, 2020, from 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM

However, if possible, you should complete the Census at home, either by logging on to my2020census.gov or by calling (844) 330-2020.

Shana Tova to my friends and constituents celebrating Rosh Hashanah. I hope the new year brings you all blessings of good health and prosperity.

Finally, it is essential that we continue to work diligently to combat the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Simple practices like hand washing or sanitizing, wearing a protective face covering in public and maintaining six feet of distance from others when possible are our best tools to keeping the pandemic under control.

Regards,

Yvette D. Clarke

Member of Congress

LEGISLATIVE HIGHLIGHTS:

Wednesday, September 9, 2020

Committee on Energy and Commerce

  • I took part in a 38-bill markup this week that included my bill, the Enhancing Broadcaster DIVERSITY Data Act. The bill was one of three communications bills from the Energy and Commerce Committee that will advance to the House floor, and will be critical for increasing diversity in the broadcast and communications industry.

Tuesday, September 15, 2020

  • I joined 173 of my colleagues in calling for the investigation into hysterectomies performed on immigrants. I am deeply concerned for the health and welfare of immigrants in ICE custody who are currently detained at the Irwin County Detention Center (ICDC). We are horrified to see reports of mass hysterectomies performed on detained women in the facility, without their full, informed consent and request that the Office of Inspector General (OIG) conduct an immediate investigation. We request that the Department of Homeland Security immediately opens an investigation to thoroughly examine allegations raised by whistleblower Dawn Wooten and immigrants currently and formerly detained in the ICDC. Read the letter here.

  • I objected the recent appeals court decision regarding the TPS status of undocumented immigrants from El Salvador, Nicaragua and Sudan. I am deeply saddened and dismayed by the disappointing decision from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday opening the door to stripping temporary protected status for undocumented immigrants from El Salvador, Nicaragua and Sudan. Rather than returning our immigration system to more certain legal footing, this decision will only work to undermine the fundamental principles of our nation of immigrants. By overturning a 2018 decision to the contrary, the 9th Circuit has empowered the White House to follow through on their stated mission of eliminating legal immigration as it exists today. We cannot stand idly by and continue to allow this administration to act so callously towards so many of the people that have worked tirelessly to accommodate our needs during the pandemic and beyond. Congress must take unequivocal action. Instead of depending on the other branches of government to protect immigrants throughout the country, we must act now to ensure all Americans have the opportunity to enjoy the bounty of this great nation.

IN THE DISTRICT:

Wednesday, September 9, 2020

  • This Wednesday, I had the privilege and honor to speak before the graduating cohorts of Flatbush Leadership Academy and the SYEP Summer Bridge Program. These extraordinary young people will be the leaders of tomorrow and I look forward to watching them as they transform our community in the years to come.

Saturday, September 12, 2020

  • This weekend, I hosted a NYC Gun Violence Prevention Response Day of Action, starting with marches through the district from affected locations and culminating with a rally at Prospect Park. I am grateful for my partners in elected office working to solve the issue of gun violence in our communities as well as the NYC CURE Violence organizations that do the on-the-ground work to protect our communities.

Sunday, September 13, 2020

  • This weekend, I participated in a Cycling for the Census Event to get out the word about the upcoming end of Census data collection. It’s critical that our district receives an adequate count in this year’s Census to ensure that we get critically needed federal resources for the next decade.

May we never forget the memory of the loved ones we lost on 9/11 and may we always remember the heroes who sacrificed their lives to save strangers.

Gun violence is an epidemic that has taken the lives of too many of our neighbors here in Brooklyn. The time has come for us to reclaim our streets and create a safer Brooklyn for us all.

Our leadership is supposed to keep us safe, not downplay the seriousness of a situation in an attempt to control optics or appear favorable.

The working class has been taken advantage of for far too long. I’m fighting alongside House Democrats to champion workers’ rights in Washington.
