John,
I’m writing to you from Colorado where the skies are thick with smoke. I want to ask you to join our Emergency Mass Call tomorrow night to help us make the most of the next 48 days before the election so my state doesn’t keep burning for decades to come.
So far, fires have burned more land than all of the state of New Jersey. In Oregon alone, over 500,000 people have been told to evacuate. That’s 10% of the entire state’s population. Here in Colorado, the smoke is so intense that we’ve been told not to go outside. I’ve spent my weekends staring out my window at the ash raining down in my neighborhood.
I’m devastated. I’m hurting. And I’m filled with rage at those in power who have gotten us in this mess. Who have decided that they’d rather let our homes burn and our neighbors die so their rich donors can keep getting richer. We need to make it stop.
Now is the time to come together as a movement and center the need for climate action in the 2020 election. We must remove Donald Trump and people like him from office once and for all. We must demand the media meet this moment ready to report on what’s happening to communities across the west, and we must do the work of talking with young people all across the country about what’s at stake.
The only way we can do that is if people like you and me around the country step up. Will you join our mass call tomorrow at 8:30p ET / 5:30p PT to learn what you can do right now?
Sunrise leaders in the West will share what’s happening on the ground and how people across the country can stand with them in this hard time. Congressional candidates and Green New Deal champions, Audrey Denney and Beth Doglio will be on your talk about their districts that are literally on fire right now, And we’ll share ways for you to directly support people who’ve lost their homes and livelihoods in these past weeks.
See you there.
