Fires leave thousands homeless

These families urgently need your help

Dear John,

A week ago, fires tore through the asylum center of Moria, Lesvos – leaving vulnerable people including children, pregnant women, elderly people and persons with disabilities sleeping on the streets.

UNHCR is working with the Greek authorities to provide temporary shelter and cover the most immediate needs. We’ve already housed 700 people and have provided chemical toilets and handwashing stations to prevent the spread of coronavirus and other diseases.

However, around 11,000 people still have nowhere to sleep. We’re doing everything we can to identify the most vulnerable families and individuals, but we need your help to find safe shelter for everyone.

Your gift to UNHCR could help make sure every single person has a roof over their head and basic items like blankets, jerry cans and soap to keep them warm, safe and healthy.

For many refugees and asylum seekers in Lesvos, this is the second time they have lost everything. Don’t let them give up hope for a life in safety and dignity.

Thank you for your continued support.

Astrid van Genderen Stort
UNHCR Head of Emergencies and Communications, PSP

P.S. A gift of just €45 could provide three sleeping bags, blankets and sleeping mats for refugee children in Greece, to keep them warm at night in the midst of this tradegy.
