It’s been more than three months since the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Heroes Act, an emergency relief bill that would provide crucial economic, nutrition, and health supports and fill major gaps in earlier legislative responses. Last week, an insufficient, narrow COVID relief bill failed to pass the Senate. Every day without a comprehensive relief package further threatens the health and economic security of people with low incomes, communities of color, and immigrant communities.

The COVID-19 public health and economic crisis has deepened racial inequities and worsened hardship among people with low incomes and Black, Latinx, Asian, Native, and immigrant families. Congress must invest in
- income and nutrition supports,
- comprehensive paid sick days and paid family and medical leave for all,
- child care for working parents,
- employment opportunities for people with low incomes, and
- fiscal relief for state and local governments.
The coronavirus pandemic emerged in the context of deep inequities across income, race, and ethnicity, which have only been exacerbated by the pandemic.
