He is a member of the Subcommittee on National Security and International Financial Institutions and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. He’s been one of the very strongest supporters of Zionism and strong U.S.-Israel relations in the Democratic party. During President Trump’s first term, he voted in line with Trump more than any other Democrat in Congress. The Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz called him “one of the Democratic party’s most outspoken supporters of Israel.” The New York Times called him a staunch supporter of U.S.-Israel relations, and Politico referred to him as an “Israel hawk.” He is an outspoken critic of “Democratic Socialism” calling it “anti-American and anti-Democratic.” Gottheimer opposed Obama’s 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal, and supported President Trump’s exiting the agreement in 2018. He was the first Democrat to oppose any resolution restricting Trump’s ability to respond to Iran’s threats, and supported U.S-Israel airstrikes. He opposed conditioning aid to Israel. He opposed BDS. He has publicly condemned by name Congressmembers hostile to Israel. Gottheimer is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of UPenn, Oxford, and Harvard Law School.
