Today — after six months of protests since the murder of Breonna Taylor — the city of Louisville finally offered a $12 million settlement for Taylor’s family.

Let’s make this clear: Justice will only be served when we finally dismantle the racist legal system that has taken away Breonna’s life and countless Black lives in our country.

Here’s how we make that happen: More often than not, it is the unwillingness of the local prosecutor that prevents justice from being served. It took a nationwide outcry and thousands of protests to make sure Breonna’s case was taken seriously and that the District Attorney didn’t drag their feet on seeking accountability for her murder.

If we want to end police brutality, we must elect more leaders who agree that Breonna’s death was preventable and will proactively fight for reform. That’s why we’re fighting to elect a record number of progressive District Attorneys this election year.
