Yesterday, Donald Trump visited the fire-ravaged West Coast to see the damage first hand.

I hoped it would be an enlightening trip because seeing the devastation here is sobering. It's a front row seat to the climate crisis, to the grief of families losing everything, even each other. There is no denying what's in front of us.

Instead, Donald Trump said this: "It'll start getting cooler. You just watch. I don't think science knows, actually."

You don't need me to tell you he's wrong. The science on this couldn't be more clear: The climate crisis is man-made, and decisions made and policies enforced by Donald Trump are only accelerating the devastating effects. And wildfires start faster and expand quicker because of the climate crisis.

I, like my fellow governors along the West Coast, am ready to work with federal officials to protect Americans from wildfires caused by the climate crisis. But President Trump's visit only served to prove we're in this alone. When there's a dereliction of leadership -- and duty -- in the White House, it becomes even clearer why state leadership matters so much.

It's why I'm fighting with my heart and soul to end the climate crisis. While Trump denies and distracts, Washingtonians know I'm in their corner to fight for them, their lives, and their homes.

President Trump denied the science and delayed action as the threat of COVID-19 spread, and we're all seeing the consequences. He's spent his life denying science and delaying action that could end the climate crisis, and we're breathing in those consequences across the West Coast.
