International Older People's Day on 1 October 2019 will see a public call to action?around combating ageism and challenging outdated language and stereotypes.? Avoiding Scams and Staying Safe at Home

Are you over 50 and want to find out more about protecting yourself and your home from doorstep crime and scams? Age Friendly Nottingham invites you to a free International Older People?s event where local experts will be sharing preventative measures that people can take to avoid crimes and scams in the home and online.? Attendees will???????????? Hear about the latest scams affecting older people.???? Explore the best ways to improve home safety. Be clear on how to report suspicious activity and access support. Visit a marketplace of stallholders offering advice on remaining safe and independent in your home. Talk to Time to Change Champions about how the impact of being scammed might affect your mental health.?????????????????? The event will be held on Tuesday 1 October 2019 (International Older People's Day) between 1.45 pm?and 3.30 pm?at Nottingham City Council, Loxley House, Station Street, Nottingham NG2 3NG. Claiming Pension Credit

Pension Credit is a benefit for people over State Pension age. It tops up your income if you're struggling to make ends meet and also enables you to claim a range of additional benefits including from 2020 a free Television Licence if you are over 75.

The quickest way to apply for Pension Credit is by phone. A friend or family member can call for you but you must be with them when they call.

Blue Badges for those with hidden disabilities

From 30 August 2019, new rules come into force which enable some people with hidden disabilities, such as autism, dementia and mental health conditions, to apply for a Blue Badge.

The new criteria extends to people who struggle to:

• Undertake a journey without there being a risk of serious harm to their health or safety, or that of any other person
• Undertake a journey without it causing them very considerable psychological distress
• Experience considerable difficulty when walking (both the physical act of and experience of walking).

Lord Mayor's Charity Tea Dances

If you enjoy dancing and meeting new people, come along to one of the Lord Mayor's Charity Tea Dances.? They are held in the Council House Ballroom and tickets can be purchased two weeks before the dance is held.? Forget Me Notts Dementia Sports Sessions

Forget Me Notts Sports Dementia Programme has been developed through a partnership between Trent Bridge, Nottingham Forest FC, Nottingham Rugby, the National Ice Centre and the Edwalton Golf Centre to provide various sporting activities for those living with dementia and their carers.? Unison Retired Members and Age Friendly Nottingham

As part of their celebrations for International Older People's Day, Unison Retired Members invite members of the public to join them on Thursday 26 September from 1.45 pm to hear more about Age Friendly Nottingham and growing older in the city.? Booking is not necessary - just turn up at the Nottingham Mechanics, 3 Sherwood Street, Nottingham NG1 4EZ.

Sycamore Social Dining

Sycamore Dining is combating social isolation and loneliness in ageing communities. Using communal/local community rooms they serve a range of meals. Sycamore?hold sessions across Nottingham. Meals are affordable (?3) as they use surplus food to develop their menus, and teams of volunteers to prepare the meals. They currently provide social dining twice a week, on Wednesday?s and Fridays. Meeting People in Bilborough

Memory Caf? in Bilborough ? first Wednesday of every month A new Memory Cafe has opened at the Pelican in Bilborough. ?It?s free ? all they ask is a small donation for tea/coffee. ? Anyone is welcome - it?s not just for people with dementia. ?If you know someone of any age who may be lonely or vulnerable or who would like to volunteer to befriend an older person please ask them to come along.?? The Smile Project is a new programme supporting older people to reduce isolation in Bilborough through a volunteer befriending programme. Groundwork?are recruiting befriending volunteers to enable individuals to access local community groups in their area.? The four objectives for the programme are:

• Reduce loneliness and isolation in older people across Bilborough
• Reduce negative effects of loneliness and isolation in older people
• Support older people to make community connections and friendships
• Set up and support older peoples sustainable community groups

Digital Support Hub at Nottingham Central Library

Visit Central Library?to benefit from free training and support to improve your digital skills to help you take a more active role in your health, care and wellbeing.? From 4 September citizens are able to access digital devices and benefit from guidance from volunteers to improve their skills and knowledge.

The support could enable you to keep in touch with family and friends, explore new hobbies or manage your health. Examples include:

• Showing people how to get online on a touchscreen device
• Being guided to download and register for the NHS App
• Ordering a repeat prescription and accessing self-management information on medical conditions
• Accessing trusted online health advice and NHS services
• Searching and exploring the Internet, keeping in touch by email and using public services online.

There?s no need to book, just pop in on a Wednesday between 10.00 am?2.00 pm, in the Storysmash Room at Nottingham Central Library, Angel Row, Nottingham, NG1 6HP
