Transitions for the PIF Campaign
2020 has been a year unlike any other. In the face of a devastating health and economic crisis, the Protecting Immigrant Families (PIF) campaign and our partners have fought for relief efforts to include immigrant families and supported community education initiatives to ensure that all families can access the resources that help them weather these challenging times. We have also engaged in research to document the harm of continued attacks from the Trump Administration and are preparing for a time when we can repair and rebuild. As the PIF Campaign gets ready for the next chapter of our work, we wanted to share some news about changes in our staff and vision for the future.

After nearly 3 years with CLASP and the PIF Campaign, I wanted to share the bittersweet news that I am leaving to accept a position with the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust in my home state of North Carolina. I have truly enjoyed being part of the PIF campaign leadership team and I am grateful for the opportunity to work with and learn from so many kind, thoughtful, brilliant advocates across the country. This has been a time of relentless attacks, but the solidarity and commitment of my colleagues and our partners has given me hope. Since I joined in January 2018, the PIF Campaign has grown from a few dozen groups to include over 500 organizations representing diverse sectors united by the belief that our collective well-being depends on all of us being healthy and safe. I have been inspired to see the ways in which community organizers, policy analysts, advocates at the state and national level, government leaders and litigators have all come together to fight back against anti-immigrant policies and push for inclusive policies that help all families thrive.
Moving forward, I am confident that PIF is in good hands with Eddie Carmona’s vision and leadership as the interim Campaign Director. I am also thankful to my friend and colleague Renato Rocha at CLASP who has agreed to increase the share of his time devoted to the PIF campaign. Renato has been involved with PIF’s work for years now, leading the incredibly effective Research Working Group, helping create and guide the subgrant process, and supporting the work of PIF grantees across the country. Renato will work closely with Eddie to provide ongoing support and leadership for the PIF Campaign and our partners.
What’s Next for PIF

While we’re sad Madison is leaving CLASP and the PIF Campaign, this is an incredible opportunity for her to improve health care access and health outcomes through racially equitable grantmaking. It’s been a joy to work with Madison and we thank her for all her service on behalf of immigrant families. We wish her the absolute best on this next chapter!
We’re also excited to share the next step in our work. Below are 3 key areas of focus that we will be moving forward leading into the Fall:

Ensure that we are prepared for potential DOJ activity on the deportation grounds of public charge and continue our efforts to advocate and incorporate our immigrant loved ones in a COVID relief package.

Initiate scenario planning that prepares us for both a potential Biden administration and the possibility of a Trump administration.

Launch a full scale PIF Listening Campaign that will allow us to reboot and talk to all of our partners about the items above, in addition to identifying strengths, weaknesses, and areas of improvement for the PIF Campaign. We want to ensure that we are in alignment and make any adjustments as necessary.
