Reuters (9/14/20) reports: "Alphabet Inc's GOOGL.O Google aims to power its data centers and offices using solely carbon-free electricity by 2030, its chief executive told Reuters, building on its previous goal of matching its energy use with 100% renewable energy. The 'stretch goal,' as CEO Sundar Pichai described it, will force Google to move beyond the tech industry norm of offsetting carbon emissions from electricity use and require technological and political breakthroughs to achieve. 'The problem is so immense, many of us need to lead the way and show solutions,' Pichai said. 'We’re one small player in this but we can set an example.' Google, which consumes slightly more power annually worldwide than residents and businesses in Delaware, has grown optimistic that it can bridge the gap with batteries to store solar power overnight, emerging sources such as geothermal reservoirs and better management of power needs."

Joe Biden channels his inner Greta Thunberg.


Wall Street Journal (9/14/20) column: "Sometimes we wonder if Joe Biden writes anything in his public remarks other than the words 'here’s the deal.' An example is the Democratic nominee’s big speech Monday on the West Coast wildfires in which he never mentioned the need for better forest management. The younger Joe Biden would never have allowed that kind of political malpractice. But his handlers let him deliver a lengthy speech that blamed the fires, Hurricanes Laura and Sally, flooding on the coasts, a windstorm in the Midwest, and the hot summer, among other events, on 'the fury of climate change everywhere—all this year and right now.' It’s as if he saw the apocalyptic climate-change melodrama of some years back, 'The Day After Tomorrow,' and decided to become Dennis Quaid. If that seems glib, how else to describe a speech that claims to revere science but is utterly detached from it? On the wildfires, Mr. Biden’s failure to mention the need to clear dry and diseased fallen trees defies what has gradually been recognized as a necessity even on the environmental left."

Energy World (9/15/20) reports: "Traffic picked up in cities across the globe as the summer season ended and schools opened, giving a boost to fuel demand, but the prospect of recovery remained weak as many commuters still worked from home and vehicle sales were down.nThe reliance on isolated forms of travel including private cars seemed to be the main factor boosting demand, analysts and traders said, as most people avoided public transport for fear of the coronavirus. Road traffic in New York, London and Paris was on a slow but steady recovery, data provided to Reuters by location technology company TomTom showed...Data provided to Reuters by the app Transit showed public transport in many cities making a much slower recovery in September compared to road traffic. People in the United Kingdom avoided public transport far more than French, data from Transit showed, while use of public transport in the United States remained low."

History shows the first thing to get hit in war are the oil fields.


E&E News (9/15/20) reports: "Drillers in the largest onshore U.S. oil and gas field are rushing to secure permits ahead of a potential Joe Biden presidency, analysts say, reflecting industry uncertainty about the November election. The Democratic presidential nominee and former vice president has proposed to effectively retire oil and gas development on federally managed lands over time, appealing to a climate-conscious left flank calling for an end to fossil fuel use. On the western edge of the Permian Basin, hedging against the possibility of this sea change is in full swing, according to data compiled by the energy consultancy Enverus and first reported by Reuters. Overall permitting activity spiked by roughly 80% over the last three months on the federal land in Texas and New Mexico, Enverus reported. Analysts believe that the upswing — in defiance of pandemic-driven low oil prices — is a race to secure drilling rights before a potential Biden administration seeks to reverse the "energy dominance" policies championed by President Trump. 'I wouldn't go so far as to say operators are expecting a Biden win,' said Bernadette Johnson, vice president of strategic analytics at Enverus. 'But I believe instead some are hedging based on several known and anticipated risks just in case.'"

E&E News (9/15/20) reports: "President Trump doubled down on his denial of climate change yesterday by saying that scientists are wrong and claiming that the world will 'start getting cooler.' The remarks, delivered during a brief visit to California to discuss the state's historic wildfires, run counter to mountains of research on global warming — including reports issued by his own administration...
Scientists have determined that human-caused climate change is increasing temperatures in California, fueling droughts and worsening wildfire conditions. Trump rejected those findings. 'It'll just start getting cooler, you just watch,' Trump told California officials in a wildfire response briefing. 'I wish science agreed with you,' said Wade Crowfoot, California's secretary for natural resources. 'Well, I don't think science knows actually,' Trump said. Trump previously described global warming as a hoax and claimed that climate goes 'up and down.' He has also said that rising atmospheric temperatures will "change back again" on their own."
