The Essential Scalia, edited by Ed Whelan, is now available

EPPC President Ed Whelan is delighted to announce that The Essential Scalia: On the Constitution, the Courts, and the Rule of Law, is being published today by the Crown Forum imprint of Penguin Random House. The third volume of Antonin Scalia’s work that Mr. Whelan has co-edited, The Essential Scalia enables the reader to encounter Justice Scalia’s great legal mind in action, from broad questions about legal interpretation to specific disputes over important constitutional provisions.

An “extraordinary collection of Justice Scalia’s legal writings—the best introduction to his legal thought.”
Harvard law professor Jack L. Goldsmith

“I am grateful to Maureen Scalia for the privilege of working on this book, which I hope will stand as an enduring monument to Justice Scalia’s great legal legacy,” said Mr. Whelan.

Mr. Whelan co-edited The Essential Scalia with another former Scalia law clerk, federal appellate judge Jeffrey S. Sutton. The volume also features a beautiful foreword by Justice Elena Kagan.

The Essential Scalia is the third volume of Justice Scalia’s work that Mr. Whelan has co-edited. The first two volumes were Scalia Speaks: Reflections on Law, Faith, and Life Well Lived (Crown Forum, 2017), a New York Times bestselling collection of Justice Scalia’s speeches, and On Faith: Lessons from an American Believer (Crown Forum, 2019), a collection of Justice Scalia’s writings on faith and religion.

Special offer through Constitution Day, September 17: If you would like a bookplate for The Essential Scalia that bears Mr. Whelan’s signature and is inscribed to you or a person of your choice, please send an email to [email protected] with (1) proof of purchase, (2) your mailing address, and (3) the name of the person(s) to whom the book should be inscribed.
